This telescoping length of double wall black stove pipe adds between 39.25" and 67.25" of length (after connection) to the stove pipe run. DVL double wall stove pipe can not be cut to length so the telescoping length makes installation simple with no cutting or crimping necessary.
For example, if you're installing a wood burning stove and plan to go through the wall with the chimney, you might need a telescoping length on the vertical run to ensure you can line up the height of the 90 degree elbow perfectly with the opening on the wall thimble. Similarly, you might need a second telescoping length to ensure you can get the proper length from the elbow to the wall thimble.
If plan to exit through the ceiling, you will likely need a telescoping length to ensure you can connect to the ceiling support box with ease.
