A masonry chimney is the classic: brick or block built on its own foundation, usually with a clay or stainless liner inside. It is heavy, permanent, and part of the building.

A Class A chimney is factory-built insulated pipe, double-walled stainless steel rated to carry wood-fire heat safely through your ceilings, walls, and roof. You assemble it from matched sections. It is the standard way to add a wood stove to a house that was not built with a chimney.

Speed, weight, and cost

This is where they part ways.

  • Time. A straightforward Class A run goes up in a day or two. A masonry chimney is a multi-day build plus curing time, and it depends on a mason's schedule.
  • Weight. Masonry is heavy and needs its own footing. Class A pipe is light enough to hang from a ceiling support box, so no foundation work.
  • Cost. Building masonry from scratch runs well into the thousands once you count the mason and the foundation. A Class A system is priced by the section: on our catalog, 6-inch insulated pipe starts at $73 a section, so you can add up your run in advance.

Fire safety: both have to earn it

Neither option skips the code. Both answer to the same national standard:

Per NFPA 211 (Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances), chimney installations must follow defined clearances to combustibles, minimum height above the roof penetration, and material requirements for the fuel type. Local codes typically adopt NFPA 211 by reference.

The difference is how they prove it. A Class A system carries a listing that does the heavy lifting for you:

Class A insulated chimney pipe, when UL 103 HT-listed for wood-burning, maintains a minimum of 2 inches clearance to combustibles per the standard listing. Always verify the exact clearance specified by the manufacturer's UL listing for the specific product.

That 2-inch clearance is the quiet advantage. It lets an insulated pipe run close to framing, so you can route a chimney through a real house without tearing it open.

When masonry is the right call

Masonry wins when the chimney is part of the look and the plan: a new build designed around a central hearth, a period home where a brick stack belongs, or a fireplace you want to feel permanent. If you have the foundation, the funds, and the time, masonry lasts for generations.

When Class A is the right call

For most people adding a wood stove to an existing home, Class A is both the cheaper and the easier answer. No foundation, no mason, no weeks of downtime, no specialized trade to hire.
