Short answer: For a wood stove or any solid-fuel appliance, use listed stainless steel chimney pipe, never single-wall galvanized stove pipe. Galvanized steel is not rated for flue-gas heat, and its zinc coating can break down and give off fumes, while listed stainless steel is built to take the temperature.
To be clear: this guide is about single-wall galvanized steel pipe, the kind sold for ductwork or as unrated stove pipe. Listed Class A chimney pipe is a different product entirely and is not covered by this warning. It is an easy mistake to make. Galvanized pipe looks similar on the shelf, sits right next to the stainless in some hardware stores, and costs less per foot. But a chimney is not ductwork. It carries fire and flue gases that run hot, and the wrong metal there is a safety problem, not a saving. Here is how the two actually behave when the fire is lit.
Why galvanized pipe fails in a chimney
Galvanized steel is mild steel with a thin zinc coating that stops rust. That coating is the problem. Zinc coatings are not built for flue-gas heat: heated enough, the zinc can degrade and release zinc-oxide fumes. Those fumes are the cause of the flu-like illness welders call "metal fume fever." On top of that, once the coating burns off, the bare mild steel underneath corrodes quickly in the acidic, moist condensate that forms inside a cooling flue.
The deciding point is not opinion, it is listing. Chimney pipe for solid fuel has to be tested and listed for the job. Galvanized stove pipe is not, which is why code and every stove manufacturer call for a listed chimney system instead.
What listed stainless steel does differently
Stainless steel handles both enemies of a flue at once: heat and corrosion. Our Class A chimney pipe is double-wall insulated stainless steel, UL 103 HT listed, and rated for 1000 F continuous use. That listing is what lets it sit safely close to wood framing. Class A insulated chimney pipe, when UL 103 HT-listed for wood-burning, maintains a minimum of 2 inches clearance to combustibles per the standard listing. Always verify the exact clearance specified by the manufacturer's UL listing for the specific product.
For relining a masonry chimney, the same logic applies: our flexible chimney liners are 316Ti stainless steel, which suits all fuel types including wood. Stainless resists the acids in wood, gas, oil, and coal exhaust, so one liner works whatever you burn.
So where does galvanized belong?
Galvanized steel is a fine, long-lasting material in the right place: gutters, cold-air ducting, fencing, anything that never sees flue-gas heat. The rule is simple. If hot combustion gas passes through it, it must be listed chimney pipe. If it only ever carries room-temperature air, galvanized is fine. A chimney is firmly in the first group.
The cost picture, honestly
A listed stainless system is not the lowest sticker on the shelf, and it should not be. But compared with the real alternatives it is very reasonable. Single-wall black stove pipe (the connector inside the room) runs from about $45, and Class A insulated chimney pipe starts around $73 for 6 inch and $123 for 8 inch per section. A complete metal Class A system costs a fraction of building or rebuilding a masonry chimney, and it goes up in a weekend rather than over weeks.
A capable homeowner can install a standard Class A kit themselves, which is where most of the labor cost disappears. Keep in mind that the warranty requires only that the system is installed according to the supplied instructions, whether you do the work or a contractor does. Either way, the metal you buy should be listed stainless.

What the code says
Per NFPA 211 (Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances), chimney installations must follow defined clearances to combustibles, minimum height above the roof penetration, and material requirements for the fuel type. Local codes typically adopt NFPA 211 by reference. In plain terms: the standard expects a listed material, and galvanized pipe does not meet it for a chimney.
