Details

The rain cap with spark arrester tops off the chimney system to retain sparks and hot embers from escaping the chimney as well as to keep rain and snow, debris, and animals from getting inside the chimney.

Our chimney cap uses the same twist lock connection as the rest of our products to allow easy removal for cleaning.

The spark guard mesh measures 3/4" to block hot embers from escaping but not being so small that it will clog up from creosote and ash.

Note: 3/4" mesh is not approved for use in California which requires 5/8" mesh.

Is a chimney cap the same as a spark arrestor?

A chimney cap keeps things out, a spark arrestor keeps embers in, and this part does both. The lid sheds rain and snow and stops birds and debris entering the flue. The mesh screen wrapped around the sides is the arrestor: it catches hot embers on their way out before they land on a roof. A plain cap with no mesh is not an arrestor.

How does a spark arrestor work?

The mesh on this cap is 3/4 inch, which is the working compromise. A finer screen catches more but blocks faster, because creosote and ash build on the wire and choke the draft. A coarser screen stays clear but lets larger embers through. At 3/4 inch it holds back hot embers and still passes flue gas at the rate the appliance needs.

Do you need a spark arrestor on a chimney?

It depends where you live, and California is the clearest case: our 3/4 inch mesh is not approved there, because the state requires 5/8 inch. If you are in California this cap is not the right part for you, and we would rather say so than take the order. Elsewhere, whether one is required is set locally and by the instructions supplied with your appliance, so check both before you decide. Wherever you are, a roof with anything combustible near the flue is the situation an arrestor exists for.

Can you take the cap off to sweep the chimney?

Yes. It uses the same twist lock connection as the rest of the system, so it comes off by hand and goes back the same way. That matters more than it sounds, because a cap that has to be unbolted at roof level is a cap that tends not to go back on. Take it off at every sweep, clear the mesh, and refit it. Leaving it off is what lets rain and nesting birds into the flue.

How do you choose the right size spark arrestor?

Match the cap to the inner diameter of your chimney pipe, not to the outlet on the stove. Those two are often the same, but not always: a system can step up from a 6 inch stove outlet to an 8 inch flue. We stock 6 inch and 8 inch, and the cap has to match whichever the chimney is. If the pipe is already up, the diameter is stamped on the section or listed on your original order.

What does a chimney spark arrestor cost?

This 6 inch cap is $111.00 and the 8 inch version is $153.00, both from stock. It is one of the lower cost parts in a chimney system and the one that protects the rest of it from rain, nesting birds and the embers that land on a roof. The 8 inch cap is here.
