They also avoid taking up interior space and eliminate the need to cut through floors and ceilings. This makes them popular for garages, cabins, additions, and homes where the stove sits against an exterior wall.

What Materials Do You Need?

Before you start, gather these materials:

  • Class A double-wall insulated chimney pipe - UL 103 HT listed, rated to 2100 degrees F. Available in 6-inch and 8-inch outside kits.
  • Wall thimble - provides the required 2-inch clearance to combustibles where the pipe passes through the wall.

For an external installation, you must use Class A chimney pipe for the entire run outside the building. Stove pipe is only used inside the room to connect the stove to the wall thimble. Never use stove pipe outdoors - it is not insulated and will cause dangerous creosote buildup and a fire risk.

Step-by-Step: Installing an External Class A Chimney Pipe

Step 1: Plan the Route

Choose a straight vertical path along the exterior wall, as close to the stove as possible. Measure the total height from the wall thimble exit point to the required chimney termination height. The chimney must meet the 3-2-10 rule per NFPA 211: the top of the chimney must be at least 3 feet above the point where it passes through the roof, and at least 2 feet higher than any part of the building within 10 feet.

Step 2: Install the Wall Thimble

Mark the point on the wall where the chimney pipe will exit. This should be directly behind or as close to the stove as possible. Cut a hole sized for the wall thimble, which maintains the required 2-inch clearance to combustibles around the Class A pipe. Secure the thimble in the wall and seal the edges with high-temperature sealant.

The wall thimble is a safety component - it prevents the heat from the chimney pipe from reaching the wood framing in your wall. Never skip the thimble or try to pass pipe through an open hole.

Step 3: Connect the Stove Pipe to the Adapter

Inside the room, connect your stove pipe from the stove to the wall thimble using a stove-pipe-to-Class-A adapter. If you are using single-wall stove pipe, maintain 18 inches of clearance to combustibles along its length. For double-wall stove pipe, maintain 6 inches clearance to walls and 8 inches to ceilings.

The adapter creates a sealed transition between the stove pipe and the Class A chimney pipe. Make sure the connection locks securely with a locking band.

What If an Overhang or Other Obstacle Is in the Way?

First determine whether the chimney can remain straight and vertical by increasing its distance from the wall. Adjustable Wall Brackets can position the chimney between 2 and 7 inches from the structure and may provide enough clearance for gutters or small overhangs.

If additional clearance is required, only compatible 15-degree or 30-degree chimney elbows may be used. Do not exceed 30 degrees from vertical or combine a 15-degree and 30-degree elbow to create a 45-degree offset. Follow all offset-length, support, and locking-band requirements.

A chimney may also pass vertically through a roof overhang. Frame the opening so that at least 2 inches of air clearance is maintained between the outside of the Class A chimney pipe and all combustible materials. Complete the penetration with the appropriate roof flashing and storm collar.

Alternatively, part of a non-structural overhang may be removed to maintain the required clearance. Do not cut, notch, or alter rafters, trusses, wall studs, or other structural components without approval from a qualified building professional.

Windows, doors, vents, trees, utility lines, and other obstacles require individual assessment. Do not select a chimney route until the required appliance, chimney, building-code, and local clearances have been confirmed.

Step 4: Install the Tee, Base Support, and Wall Brackets

On the outside wall, connect the horizontal Class A chimney pipe to the Tee with Clean-Out Cap. Install the Tee on a Base Wall Support Kit secured to structurally sound wall framing. The Base Wall Support carries the vertical weight of the exterior chimney and supports a maximum of 52 feet of chimney pipe.

Continue upward with Class A chimney pipe, securing every joint with the required locking band. Install Adjustable Wall Brackets at regular vertical intervals. We recommend spacing the brackets every 4 to 6 feet, but the distance between brackets must never exceed 8 feet.

Wall brackets provide lateral stability only. They do not support the vertical weight of the chimney. Use a level during installation to keep the chimney straight and vertical

Step 5: Terminate Above the Roofline

Once the chimney reaches the required height (3-2-10 rule), install the storm collar and chimney cap. The storm collar sits tight against the pipe and directs rainwater away from the joint. The chimney cap sits on top and prevents rain, birds, and debris from entering.

Step 6: Seal and Test

Apply high-temperature sealant around the wall thimble and any flashing to make the system watertight. Then run a small test fire and check for proper draft. Smoke should draw steadily upward and exit through the chimney cap. If you notice smoke leaking at any joint, shut down the fire and check the locking bands.

External Chimneys in Cold Climates

Class A chimney pipe is insulated and approved for exterior installation without an enclosure. However, in climates with sustained low temperatures, enclosing the exterior chimney in a properly constructed chase can help keep the flue gases warmer. This may improve draft and reduce condensation and creosote buildup.

A chase does not replace the chimney’s required supports or reduce its clearance requirements. Maintain at least 2 inches of air clearance between the outside of the Class A chimney pipe and all combustible chase materials. Do not fill this clearance space with insulation.

The chimney must remain supported by the Base Wall Support, Adjustable Wall Brackets, and any required roof support components. The chase itself must not be used as an improvised chimney support.

Provide a weatherproof chase top and suitable flashing to prevent water from entering the enclosure. The chimney cap must remain fully exposed and must comply with the required termination height.

Provide an accessible inspection or clean-out door at the Tee Cap. The Tee Cap must remain removable for chimney inspection and cleaning. Construct the chase in accordance with local building and fire codes.

  • Using stove pipe outdoors - stove pipe is not insulated and not rated for exterior use. Always use Class A chimney pipe outside the building envelope.
  • Skipping wall brackets - an unsupported chimney can shift, lean, or come loose in wind. Bracket every 4 to 6 feet.
  • Poor sealing at the wall thimble - gaps let water into the wall cavity, leading to rot and mold. Seal with high-temperature sealant.
