How Does an Exterior Chimney Installation Work?

Inside the room, double wall stove pipe connects your wood stove to a wall thimble. The thimble is a fire-rated pass-through that allows the pipe to safely penetrate the combustible exterior wall. On the outside, the pipe transitions to Class A insulated chimney pipe, makes a 90-degree turn upward with a tee fitting (which also serves as a cleanout access point), and rises vertically along the wall. Wall support brackets hold the pipe in place every few feet. At the top, the chimney must meet the 3-2-10 rule: at least 3 feet above the roof penetration point and at least 2 feet higher than anything within 10 feet.

Advantages of an Exterior Chimney

  • More creosote risk. The cooler flue temperatures on an exterior chimney cause more condensation of flue gases, which leads to faster creosote accumulation. Plan on more frequent cleaning compared to an interior chimney.
  • Visual impact. An exterior chimney is visible from outside your home. Some homeowners and HOAs may not prefer the look of a metal chimney pipe running up the side of the house.

Key Requirements for an Exterior Chimney

  • Use only UL 103 HT listed Class A insulated chimney pipe for the exterior run. Single wall or double wall stove pipe is not rated for exterior use or wall/roof penetrations.
  • Install a wall thimble at the wall penetration point. This provides the required clearance to combustible wall materials (typically 2 inches for Class A pipe).
  • Use a tee fitting at the base of the vertical run. The tee's bottom cap serves as a cleanout access for removing ash and creosote.
