Class A chimney pipe is a factory-built, double-walled, insulated stainless steel pipe designed to vent solid fuel appliances such as wood stoves, fireplace inserts, and outdoor boilers. The inner wall is stainless steel for corrosion resistance. Between the inner and outer walls sits a layer of ceramic or rock wool insulation. The outer wall is either galvalume or stainless steel.

This sandwich construction keeps the outer surface cool enough to install close to combustible framing, while the inner liner can handle continuous operation at 1000 F and brief chimney fire temperatures up to 2100 F. It also keeps flue gases hot, which improves draft and reduces creosote buildup.

Class A is the modern U.S. standard for new chimney installations. You'll see it sold as Class A insulated chimney pipe in 6 inch and 8 inch diameters for residential use. Or in a kit like the Through-the-wall Class A chimney kit.

U.S. Codes That Apply to Class A Installations

Three documents govern how Class A chimney pipe is installed in U.S. homes:

  • UL 103 HT: The Underwriters Laboratories safety standard for factory-built chimneys serving solid fuel appliances. Any Class A pipe used with a wood stove must carry this listing. The "HT" stands for High Temperature.
  • NFPA 211: The National Fire Protection Association standard for chimneys, fireplaces, vents, and solid fuel-burning appliances. Most local jurisdictions reference NFPA 211 for clearances, support, and installation practice.
  • IRC (International Residential Code): Adopted in most U.S. states. Sections M1801 through M1805 cover vent systems and chimneys. Some states use the IRC with local amendments.

On top of these national documents, your local building department may have additional requirements. Always check with them before you start work. The manufacturer's installation instructions are also enforceable: a listed Class A system must be installed exactly as the manufacturer specifies, and inspectors will compare your install against the listing label.

Do You Need a Permit?

In nearly all U.S. jurisdictions, installing a new wood stove and chimney is considered work that requires a building permit. Even when the work is small, you typically need to:

  • Pull a permit before starting (mechanical or building, depending on your jurisdiction)
  • Schedule a rough inspection partway through
  • Pass a final inspection before using the appliance

Homeowner installs are allowed in most states, but a few require a licensed installer for solid fuel appliances. Check with your local building department. If you're in a historic district, on HOA property, or in an EPA Smoke Control Area, you may face additional restrictions on the appliance type or chimney exterior.

How High Does the Chimney Need to Go? The 3-2-10 Rule

This is the rule most homeowners get wrong. The 3-2-10 rule is non-negotiable in NFPA 211 and in the IRC:

  • At least 3 feet above the point where the chimney exits the roof
  • At least 2 feet taller than any portion of the building or structure within 10 feet horizontally

So if you have a steep roof and the chimney exits 6 feet below the peak, the chimney has to extend at least 2 feet above that peak (since the peak is within 10 feet horizontally). Inspectors check this. Skipping height to save money on pipe sections is the most common reason new installs fail inspection.

Minimum Total Chimney Height (for Draft)

The 3-2-10 rule sets the minimum height above the roof, but for good draft you also want enough total vertical run from the appliance to the cap. A typical wood stove draws best with at least 15 feet of total chimney height from the flue collar to the top. Less than that and you'll struggle with smoke spillage when you open the loading door, especially in mild weather.

Tall, straight, well-insulated chimneys draft best. Class A pipe is well-insulated by design, which is one reason it outperforms older single-wall systems for cold-climate installations.

Clearance to Combustibles

Class A pipe is rated for a 2 inch clearance to combustibles in nearly all listings. That's the minimum gap between the outer wall of the pipe and any wood framing, drywall, insulation, or other combustible material.

The 2 inch number is for the chimney pipe itself. Where the pipe penetrates a wall, ceiling, or roof, you need one of the following:

  • Wall thimble: Required for any wall penetration. The thimble maintains the clearance and supports the pipe.
  • Ceiling support box: Required where the pipe passes through a ceiling. It maintains clearance and supports the weight of the pipe above.
  • Attic insulation shield: Required where the pipe passes through an attic or insulated space. It keeps insulation from contacting the hot outer wall.
  • Roof flashing and storm collar: Required at the roof penetration to seal against weather while maintaining clearance.

Skipping any of these and trying to "build your own" version is the second most common reason installs fail inspection. The listed components exist for a reason.

Single-Wall Stove Pipe vs Class A: Where Each Goes

Class A insulated chimney pipe and stove pipe (also called connector pipe) are not interchangeable. Here's the rule:

  • Inside the room, between the stove and the ceiling or wall transition: Use single-wall or double-wall stove pipe. Single-wall needs 18 inches of clearance to combustibles. Double-wall needs 6 inches.
  • Through any wall, ceiling, attic, or roof, and outside up to the cap: Use Class A insulated chimney pipe with 2 inch clearance.

Stove pipe is not chimney pipe. It can't pass through a wall, ceiling, or roof. The transition happens at the wall thimble or ceiling support box, where stove pipe ends and Class A begins.

Offsets and Bends: How Many Can You Have?

Straight is always best. A perfectly vertical chimney drafts better, stays cleaner, and is easier to sweep. In the real world, framing and roof structures sometimes force you to offset.

Most Class A manufacturers allow up to two offsets in a system. Available angles are typically 15, and 30 degrees from vertical. NFPA 211 generally limits total horizontal run to no more than the vertical run.

Every offset reduces draft. A 15 degree elbow costs you less draft than a 30 degree, but none of them are free. Pick the smallest angle that solves the framing problem you're working around.

If you need an offset:

  • Use the elbow pieces from the same manufacturer as the rest of your Class A system
  • Choose the smallest angle that works (15 degrees if it gets you past the obstruction, 30 only if 15 won't.
  • Support every offset with the listed support hardware (do not rely on the pipe alone)
  • Plan for a clean-out at the lowest point of any offset so soot can be removed

If draft drops noticeably after adding an offset, the standard fix is to add Class A length above the roof. Taller chimneys draw harder, which can compensate for draft lost in the bends. The 3-2-10 rule sets the minimum height, but there is no maximum, you can go higher.

Sizing Your Class A Pipe

Match the pipe diameter to the appliance outlet, not to the chimney you're replacing. Most modern wood stoves use a 6 inch flue. Larger stoves, freestanding fireplaces, and outdoor wood furnaces often use 7 or 8 inch.

Never reduce below the appliance outlet. Oversizing seems harmless but actually hurts draft because the gases cool too quickly. A 6 inch stove vented through an 8 inch Class A chimney will draft poorly and burn dirty unless the stove manufacturer explicitly allows it.

Chimney Caps (the U.S. Term for Cowls)

A chimney cap is required on every Class A install. It does three things:

  • Keeps rain, snow, leaves, and small animals out of the flue
  • Includes a spark arrestor screen to prevent burning embers from landing on the roof
  • Helps maintain draft in gusty wind

Spark arrestor screens are required by NFPA 211 and by most state codes for solid fuel appliances. Class A pipe systems typically include a matching cap as part of the kit or as a separate component.

Insulation Shields and Support Hardware

Where the chimney passes through an attic or other insulated space, an insulation shield is required to keep loose-fill or batt insulation away from the hot pipe. Where it passes through a floor or ceiling, a ceiling support box carries the weight of the chimney above.

Class A pipe is heavier than it looks. A 15 foot stack of 6 inch pipe weighs 60 to 80 pounds. You can't hang that load from the stove. Use the manufacturer's support components at every interface.

Inspection, Cleaning, and Maintenance

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends an annual inspection for any chimney serving a wood-burning appliance. There are three inspection levels:

  • Level 1: Visual check of readily accessible parts. The baseline annual check for homeowners.
  • Level 2: Includes camera scan of the flue interior. Required after a chimney fire, when buying a home, or after changing appliances.
  • Level 3: Invasive inspection that may require removing parts of the chimney or surrounding structure. Done when there's reason to suspect hidden damage.

Cleaning frequency depends on how hard you run the stove. A daily-burning stove in winter typically needs at least one sweep per year. Burning unseasoned wood or running the stove low and slow speeds up creosote buildup, so heavy users may need a mid-season sweep.

EPA Certified Stoves and Class A Pipe

Stoves manufactured after May 2020 must meet the EPA 2020 New Source Performance Standard (NSPS). These stoves burn more efficiently and produce less particulate matter than older models, which is good for air quality and good for your chimney. Cleaner burn means less creosote, which means safer operation between sweeps.

EPA certified stoves work with any UL 103 HT listed Class A chimney system. There's no special pipe required for EPA stoves, just match the diameter to the stove outlet and follow the manufacturer's install instructions.
