Can a Wood Stove Vent Through a Wall?

Yes, when the stove and chimney instructions allow that route. The connector pipe remains inside the room. It reaches a listed wall thimble, where the insulated chimney system begins and continues vertically outside. Do not pass single-wall or double-wall room connector pipe through the wall.

A through-wall route normally needs more exterior chimney and support than a straight roof route. Measure the full vertical rise and every offset before ordering.

Can You Use an Existing Masonry Chimney?

Possibly, after the chimney has been inspected. The flue must be sound, suitable for the appliance, and sized for the connection. A stainless steel liner can provide a continuous, correctly sized flue-gas path when the inspection and installation requirements call for one.

Do not assume that every masonry chimney needs the same treatment or that an open, oversized flue is ready for a stove. The stove manual, inspection findings, adopted code, and liner instructions determine the work.

How Do You Size the Chimney?

Use the flue-collar diameter and sizing rules in the stove manual. The store carries common chimney components in 6-inch and 8-inch diameters, but the stocked size does not override the appliance specification. Avoid reducing the flue below the collar or enlarging it without an approved design.

Which Clearances Apply?

Per NFPA 211, single-wall stove pipe (the connector pipe inside the room between the appliance and the Class A chimney) must maintain at least 18 inches of clearance from any combustible wall, ceiling, or framing.

Listed double-wall connector pipe can have reduced clearances. The exact wall and ceiling distances come from that product's listing and installation instructions, not from NFPA 211 as one blanket figure for every double-wall connector. For the DVL components sold by the store, the manufacturer lists 6 inches to walls and 8 inches to ceilings, measured at a 90-degree angle to the pipe. Follow the appliance instructions if they require more clearance.

Class A insulated chimney pipe, when UL 103 HT-listed for wood-burning, maintains a minimum of 2 inches clearance to combustibles per the standard listing. Always verify the exact clearance specified by the manufacturer's UL listing for the specific product.

The stove itself has separate clearances and hearth requirements in its manual. Do not transfer a pipe clearance to the appliance or use a wall shield unless the relevant instructions permit the reduction.

How High Must the Chimney Be?

The 3-2-10 rule (NFPA 211 / IRC R1003.9) requires that a chimney extend at least 3 feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof, AND at least 2 feet higher than any portion of the building, structure, or obstruction within a 10-foot horizontal radius.
