The Two Pipe Types Every Wood Stove Install Uses

Every code-compliant wood stove install uses two distinct pipe types that do different jobs. Confusing them is the most common beginner mistake, and it will fail inspection every time.

Connector Stove Pipe (Black Pipe)

Stove pipe, sometimes called connector pipe or black pipe, runs from the top of your wood stove to the ceiling, wall, or thimble where the chimney begins. It stays inside the heated room. Stove pipe comes in two versions.

  • Single-wall stove pipe is one layer of heavy-gauge steel. It costs less, radiates more heat back into the room, and needs 18 inches of clearance to combustibles.
  • Double-wall stove pipe is two layers with an air gap between. It drafts better, produces less creosote, and drops the clearance requirement to 6 inches.

Class A Chimney Pipe

Class A chimney pipe is insulated, UL 103 HT listed, and tested to survive 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit during a chimney fire. It carries a 2-inch clearance to combustibles and is the only pipe type allowed to pass through ceilings, attics, walls, and roofs.

How to Decide Which Pipe You Need Where

The rule is simple: stove pipe inside the room, Class A chimney pipe for everything else. Here is how it plays out in the two most common install paths.

Starting From the Stove

Every install starts with connector stove pipe from the flue collar on top of the wood stove. This piece runs up, or angled, toward wherever the venting leaves the heated room. The length depends on your ceiling height and whether you are going straight up or out through a wall.

Keep the stove pipe as short and straight as possible. Every elbow reduces draft by roughly the equivalent of 5 feet of straight pipe. A run that goes up and through the ceiling drafts best. A run with multiple elbows or a long horizontal leg can struggle to draft on cold starts.

Passing Through Ceilings, Walls, or Roofs

The moment your venting leaves the heated room, it must switch to Class A chimney pipe. The transition happens at one of three points.

  • Through the ceiling: a ceiling support box or finish support installs in the ceiling. Stove pipe terminates into the bottom of the box. Class A starts at the top and continues up through the attic and out the roof.
  • Through the wall: a tee support or through-the-wall kit handles the transition on the exterior wall, then Class A runs up the outside of the house. See the steps in our Class A external install guide.

Sizing Your Chimney Pipe to Your Wood Stove

Pipe diameter matters as much as pipe type. Undersize the pipe and you starve the stove for draft. Oversize it and you cool the flue gases, which makes creosote problems worse.

Match the Flue Collar

Your stove has a flue collar on top, the round opening where exhaust leaves the appliance. Measure its inside diameter. That is the size your stove pipe and Class A chimney pipe must be. For most EPA-certified wood stoves on the U.S. market, the collar is 6 inches. Larger stoves and older heaters run 7 or 8 inches. A few small stoves use 5 inches.

Never reduce the diameter as the exhaust rises. Going from 6 inches at the stove to 5 inches in the Class A is a code violation and a draft killer. You can increase diameter at the transition if your manual allows it, but you can never decrease it.

6 Inch vs 8 Inch

A 6-inch system is standard for most modern wood stoves under 3 cubic feet of firebox. Our 6-inch stove pipe and matching 6-inch Class A are the most common combination we ship.

An 8-inch system suits larger stoves, older non-EPA heaters, and shop or workshop stoves. If your appliance manual specifies 8 inches, do not drop to 6 to save money. The pipes cost more, but they match the stove your manufacturer designed.

Single Wall or Double Wall Stove Pipe

If your stove sits 18 inches or more from the nearest combustible wall, single-wall stove pipe is cheap and works well. If the stove is closer, or you want better draft and less creosote, go with double-wall. Double-wall drops the clearance to combustibles to 6 inches and runs cleaner on cold starts.

The Complete Parts List for a Typical Install

Here is what a standard through-the-ceiling install needs, top to bottom.

  1. Wood stove with flue collar (your appliance, not in our kit).
  2. Stove pipe adapter or starter section to connect the stove collar to the first stove pipe section.
  3. Stove pipe sections, single or double-wall, enough to reach the ceiling.
  4. Ceiling support box, which holds the transition to Class A and provides fire-rated framing.
  5. Class A chimney pipe sections, enough length to hit code height above the roof.
  6. Attic insulation shield if the pipe passes through an insulated attic.
  7. Roof flashing matched to your roof pitch.
  8. Storm collar that seals the pipe where it exits the flashing.
  9. UL listed chimney cap, with a spark arrestor in high-fire zones.

For a through-the-wall exterior install, swap the ceiling support box for a tee support kit and add a wall thimble, then run Class A up the outside of the house.

Common Wrong Choices to Avoid

These are the mistakes we see most often from DIY installers choosing chimney pipe for a wood stove.

Using stove pipe through a ceiling or wall. Single or double-wall black pipe is not rated for this, ever. Only Class A can pass through any combustible barrier.

Buying pipe in the wrong diameter. Measure your stove's flue collar before you order. Do not trust the old pipe in the house; a previous owner may have installed the wrong size.

Reducing diameter along the run. The pipe must stay the same size or grow larger from the stove to the cap. Shrinking it kills draft and fails inspection.

Skipping the ceiling support box or wall thimble. These are fire-rated components, not optional trim. Your inspector will require them.

Using aluminum or galvanized pipe. Wood stove pipe must be heavy-gauge steel, usually 22 or 24 gauge. Aluminum warps. Galvanized coatings can release toxic fumes when heated.

Mixing Class A brands. Every Class A chimney system is UL tested as a complete system. Mixing brand A's pipe with brand B's support box voids the UL listing and the warranty. Buy your entire Class A run from one manufacturer.
